Artem Dzyuba, the captain and top scorer of the Russian National Team, had asked for his forgiveness from the A National Team squad to be assembled during the period when Russia invaded Ukraine.
Announcing the National Team squad, Russia National Team coach Valery Karpin said of Dzyuba's absence from the squad; "I spoke to him over the weekend. As I understand it, he did not want to be in the squad due to the ongoing difficult situation with Ukraine. He said that many people from his family are Ukrainians and they continue to live there under difficult circumstances. For these reasons, he asked for his forgiveness this time, but promised to return to the squad when this confusion was over." he had spoken.
DZYUBA: I THINK YOUR FRIEND MISUNDERSTOOD ME
These statements by Karpin increased the reaction against Dzyuba in Russia, while Zenit's 33-year-old striker told the Russian press about the matter; "I did not go to the national team for political reasons. I asked for my forgiveness for purely family reasons, but I don't want to give details about it. I think Karpin misunderstood my words or what he said was misspelled."yes," he said.
